Spey Flies Book Cover

Following is an excerpt from the book: "Gerald Bartsch is a professional fly tier from British Columbia. Apart from recreating the classic Spey flies of yesteryear he has also designed his own series of patterns that combine the elegance and simplicity of the traditional flies with startling new colour combinations and an innovative use of materials to produce flies that are not only beautiful but eminently 'fishable'. Gerald ties his flies to the highest standards and is insistent that the time and care spent makes a real difference to the fishing performance. Almost all his flies are tied with an underbody of tinsel to ensure that the translucence and sparkle of the dubbing or the floss is not lost when the fly is wet. There is no doubt that touches like this make the difference between a usable fly and one that has 'that special something extra'." (Permission to use the images and excerpt was personally granted by Chris Mann.)

First Place - Best of the Bench
Virtual Fly Shop Competition

In 2000, Gerald entered his H.D. Purple Spey pattern and won first place.

John Schaper of Whiting Farms judged the competition and had the following comments:

"There were some beautiful flies entered this month, all showing a degree of class and talent that took my breath away.

Gerald's H.D. Purple Spey moved to the top with an elegance that set it apart from the others.  His spey is graceful, and understated, yet it has the vibrancy of color that attracts the angler, as well as his prey.  Gerald's floss work is neat and smooth, his tinsel wraps even and uniform.  His hackle is placed perfectly next to the tinsel for maximum protection, and his mallard roof is smooth, and uniform.  The head is glossy, and small.  Overall, a work of art, and a winner!"
